Prayer and the Amidah

The Ultimate Weapon to help you STAND

Have you ever thought…

If I could just find the “key” to walking out a life pleasing to Yahweh

And overcome the trials of the world

The most powerful “tool” we have Is uninterrupted communication with YHWH

Prayer …

Strengthens our faith

Allows the grace of YHWH to flow through us

Keeps us in communion with the Father

Is supernatural, human nature tells us that something should be a certain way. Prayer can change that!

Keeps our focus on the Father so we don’t fall into the trap of “by my own hand” (Deut. 8:17)

Prayer and the Heart go together

We act and speak according to our hearts, not our brain

Deuteronomy 4:39-40

(39) know today, and establish it in your heart, that Adonai is God in heaven above and on earth below - there is no other. (40) Therefore, you are to keep his laws and mitzvot which I am giving you today, so that it will go well with you and with your children after you, and so that you will prolong your days in the land Adonai your God is giving you forever."

What keeps us from the Father?

Isaiah 59:1-2

(1) Adonai's arm is not too short to save, nor is his ear too dull to hear. (2) Rather, it is your own crimes that separate you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he doesn't hear.

Proverbs 28:9

If a person will not listen to Torah, even his prayer is an abomination.

The fact is…

The Father WANTS to hear our prayer, He is waiting to hear us. He desires relationship and communion with us. If we feel that our prayer doesn’t make a difference, or if we believe that He doesn’t care to hear us…We have bought the lie.

The first century believers would often pray three times a day. These times of prayer were synced with the offerings in the temple. While there were offerings (Korbanot) going on the altar, there were prayers ascending to the Father as well. Two of the prayers that would be said at least twice a day was “the Shema” and “the Amidah.”

The Shema is three passages of Scripture that are intended to remind us of the One we serve. These passages are;

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

"Sh'ma, Yisra'el! Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra'el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; (5) and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. (6) These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; (7) and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead, (9) and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 11:13-21

"So if you listen carefully to my mitzvot which I am giving you today, to love Adonai your God and serve him with all your heart and all your being; (14) then, [says Adonai,] 'I will give your land its rain at the right seasons, including the early fall rains and the late spring rains; so that you can gather in your wheat, new wine and olive oil; (15) and I will give your fields grass for your livestock; with the result that you will eat and be satisfied.' (16) But be careful not to let yourselves be seduced, so that you turn aside, serving other gods and worshipping them. (17) If you do, the anger of Adonai will blaze up against you. He will shut up the sky, so that there will be no rain. The ground will not yield its produce, and you will quickly pass away from the good land Adonai is giving you. (18) Therefore, you are to store up these words of mine in your heart and in all your being; tie them on your hand as a sign; put them at the front of a headband around your forehead; (19) teach them carefully to your children, talking about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up; (20) and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates - (21) so that you and your children will live long on the land Adonai swore to your ancestors that he would give them for as long as there is sky above the earth.

Numbers 15:37-41

Adonai said to Moshe, (38) "Speak to the people of Isra'el, instructing them to make, through all their generations, tzitziyot on the corners of their garments, and to put with the tzitzit on each corner a blue thread. (39) It is to be a tzitzit for you to look at and thereby remember all of Adonai's mitzvot and obey them, so that you won't go around wherever your own heart and eyes lead you to prostitute yourselves; (40) but it will help you remember and obey all my mitzvot and be holy for your God. (41) I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt in order to be your God. I am Adonai your God."

The next is the Amidah. The Hebrew word Amidah is from the word “Amad” which means stand. This originally was a series of eighteen different prayers. One more was added to make a total of nineteen. These are called the prayer of standing because as they are offered it is believed that we come into the presence of YHWH i.e. petition Him or stand before Him.

I can’t help but think that Paul said when we’ve done all we can do, STAND. I believe that he was referencing these prayers. When you’ve done all you can do from your own hands or strength, PRAY. Prayer should be our first thought when things happen, not a last resort. We should realize that when we are done working in the strength of our own hands, it is time to do what we should’ve done from the beginning, turn our hearts to the Father.

Below is a version of the Amidah that you can pray.

First Blessing- THE GOD OF HISTORY

Blessed are You, O Yahweh our Elohim and Elohim of our fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac and the Elohim of Jacob, the great, mighty and revered Elohim, the Most High Elohim who bestows loving kindnesses, the creator of all things, who remembers the good deeds of the patriarchs and in love will bring a redeemer to their children's children for his name's sake. O king, helper, savior and shield. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the shield of Abraham

Second Blessing- THE GOD OF NATURE

You, O Yahweh, are mighty forever, You revive the dead, You have the power to save. You sustain the living with loving kindnesses, You revive the dead with great mercy, You support the falling, heal the sick, set free the bound and keep faith with those who sleep in the dust. Who is like You, O doer of mighty acts? Who resembles You, a king who puts to death and restores to life, and causes salvation to flourish? And You are certain to revive the dead. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who revives the dead.

We will sanctify Your name in this world just as it is sanctified in the highest heavens, as it is written by Your prophet: "And they call out to one another and say:

'Holy, holy, holy is Yahweh of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.'

Those facing them praise Elohim saying:

"Blessed be the Presence of Yahweh in his place."

And in Your Holy Words it is written, saying,

"Yahweh reigns forever, Your Elohim, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah."

Throughout all generations we will declare Your greatness, and to all eternity we will proclaim your holiness. Your praise, O our Elohim, shall never depart from our mouth, for You are a great and holy Elohim and King. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the holy Elohim. You are holy, and Your name is holy, and holy beings praise You daily. (Selah.) Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the holy Elohim.

You favor men with knowledge, and teach mortals understanding. O favor us with the knowledge, the understanding and the insight that come from You. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the gracious giver of knowledge.

Fifth Blessing- FOR REPENTANCE

Forgive us, O our Father, for we have sinned; pardon us, O our King, for we have transgressed; for You pardon and forgive. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who is merciful and always ready to forgive.

Look upon our affliction and plead our cause, and redeem us speedily for Your name’s sake, for You are a mighty redeemer. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the redeemer of Israel.

Sound the great shofar for our freedom, raise the ensign to gather our exiles, and gather us from the four corners of the earth. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who gathers the dispersed of his people Israel.

Restore our judges as in former times, and our counselors as at the beginning; and remove from us sorrow and sighing. Reign over us, You alone, O Yahweh, with loving kindness and compassion, and clear us in judgment. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the King who loves righteousness and justice.

Let there be no hope for slanderers, and let all wickedness perish in an instant. May all Your enemies quickly be cut down, and may You soon in our day uproot, crush, cast down and humble the dominion of arrogance. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who smashes enemies and humbles the arrogant.

May Your compassion be stirred, O Yahweh our Elohim, towards the righteous, the pious, the elders of Your people the house of Israel, the remnant of their scholars, towards proselytes, and towards us also. Grant a good reward to all who truly trust in Your name. Set our lot with them forever so that we may never be put to shame, for we have put our trust in You. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, the support and stay of the righteous.

Fifteenth Blessing- FOR THE MESSIANIC KING

Speedily cause the offspring of Your servant David to flourish, and let him be exalted by Your saving power, for we wait all day long for Your salvation. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who causes salvation to flourish.

Hear our voice, O Yahweh our Elohim; spare us and have pity on us. Accept our prayer in mercy and with favor, for You are a Elohim who hears prayers and supplications. O our King, do not turn us away from Your presence empty-handed, for You hear the prayers of Your people Israel with compassion. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who hears prayer.

Be pleased, O Yahweh our Elohim, with Your people Israel and with their prayers. Restore the service to the inner sanctuary of Your Temple, and receive in love and with favor both the fire-offerings of Israel and their prayers. May the worship of Your people Israel always be acceptable to You. And let our eyes behold Your return in mercy to Zion. Blessed are You, O Yahweh, who restores his divine presence to Zion.

We give thanks to You that You are Yahweh our Elohim and the Elohim of our fathers forever and ever. Through every generation You have been the rock of our lives, the shield of our salvation. We will give You thanks and declare Your praise for our lives that are committed into Your hands, for our souls that are entrusted to You, for Your miracles that are daily with us, and for Your wonders and Your benefits that are with us at all times, evening, morning and noon. O beneficent one, Your mercies never fail; O merciful one, Your loving-kindnesses never cease. We have always put our hope in You. For all these acts may Your name be blessed and exalted continually, O our King, forever and ever. Let every living thing give thanks to You and praise Your name in truth, O Elohim, our salvation and our help. (Selah.) Blessed are You, O Yahweh, whose Name is the Beneficent One, and to whom it is fitting to give thanks.

Nineteenth Blessing -FOR PEACE

My Elohim, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking deceitfully. To those who curse me, let my soul be silent; and let my soul be like dust to everyone. Open my heart to Your Torah, then my soul will pursue Your commandments. As for all those who design evil against me, speedily nullify their counsel and disrupt their design. Act for Your Name's sake; act for Your right hand's sake; act for Your sanctity's sake; act for Your Torah's sake. That Your beloved ones may be given rest; let Your right hand save, and respond to me. May they be acceptable the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart, before You Yeshua, my rock and my redeemer. He Who makes peace in His heights may He make peace among us and upon all Israel. Grant peace, welfare, blessing, grace, lovingkindness and mercy to us and to all Israel your people. Bless us, O our Father, one and all, with the light of your countenance; for by the light of your countenance you have given us, O Lord our God, a Torah of life, lovingkindness and salvation, blessing, mercy, life and peace.

May it please you to bless your people Israel at all times and in every hour with your peace.

Blessed are you, O Lord, who blesses his people Israel with peace. Amein
